Today, in connection with the official announcement of the 2008 results of the Renault group, the Spanish workers from Renault Valladolid are demonstrating in Paris. They are strongly supported by the French trade unions from Renault. The Spanish workers are concerned for their jobs. The announcements by French President Sarkozy, together with the decisions taken by the French management to transfer production programmes between the sites of Valladolid and Flins (F) and Sandouville (F), raise heavy doubts as to their future employment. In a declaration published today, the Renault Group Works Council (European Works Council) supports the position of the Spanish workers, underlining that the different production sites must not be played off against each other. The EWC is calling for an even playing field approach to industrial policy for all sites, and points out that the Spanish region of Valladolid is already hard-hit by high unemployment. Peter Scherrer, the EMF General Secretary, has called for a global approach to costs, i.e. not focussing on labour costs - given the very small part represented by wages in the price of a car - but taking a better balance of production sites into account. The EMF expresses its solidarity with the concerns of the workers for their jobs. In a letter to Vice President Verheugen on 26th January, the EMF expressed its concern about the French President’s declarations regarding the conditions put forward for accessing aid through the French recovery package. The EMF is arranging a meeting between the Renault Group general management, the EMF and representatives of the Renault’s EWC at the request of the Renault Group Works council. ___________ PRESS 6/2009 ______________ The EMF is the representative body defending the interests of workers in the European metal industry.
