“Yes to jobs and a future at Areva but no to the dismantling of AREVA by its shareholders.” This was the message from several hundred AREVA workers at a rally in Paris today. “The decision to sell the T&D division is not good for T&D itself, is not good for AREVA and will certainly have dramatic consequences for the workers. Instead of putting employment at risk AREVA should secure the financial means to create the thousands of jobs that its growing activities can generate,” said EMF General Secretary Peter Scherrer. Workers from France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Spain and Italy took part in today’s rally which was part of a series of protest actions at Areva sites across Europe: * Austria – Information meeting on the current situation, distribution of leaflets and signature of a petition. * Belgium – Television interview with a joint trade union delegation. Work stoppage from 2.00 p.m. to the following day by workers at the Dison site. * France – Leaflets handed out to workers at the Areva headquarters in Paris. One-hour strikes at the sites of Villeurbanne, Pompignane, Aix-les-Bains, Massy, Mâcon and Montpellier. * Germany – One-hour work stoppage by the 2,500 German workers. * Italy – One-hour strike in all plants. * Spain – Information meetings on the situation and flyers distributed. * Hungary – Information meetings and signature of a petition. * United Kingdom – Delegations participate in rally in Paris. Trade union and EWC representatives will meet shortly to discuss and prepare further measures under EMF auspices __________ PRESS 33/2008 The EMF is the representative body defending the interests of workers in the European metal industry.
