The Bureau of the EWC of Suez met to consider several issues. Reports were given on the work done in the different committees (energy, water, waste) and the health and safety committee.
Discussion concentrated on recent efforts of an investment fund to argue for a break up of the company to free so-called share holder value. Suez has reacted that there are no reasons for this. The Bureau discussed these recent developments with the financial expert of the unions who also concluded there is little justification.
The Bureau considered the social indicators developed by Suez to monitor the application of the Social Charter and to contribute to the social pillar of corporate social responsibility. It was argued more work need to be done to structurally strengthen the application of the Charter. This will be followed up.
Discussion continued on the possibilities for the members to receive training in communication systems (First Class, developed by ETUCO). A first proposal was rejected due to high costs. SUEZ will establish an Equal Opportunities Committee. The Bureau will discuss this at its next meeting in January 2005.
