Never had Austrian metalworkers' unions announced a figured wage claim for collective negotiations before. Never had they called for a strike after the first bargaining meeting either. Now they have, after the meeting of October 4th between employers and unions. At a surprise press conference, unions' negotiators announced that they wanted a 5.5% wage increase (employers offered 3.1%) as well as a EUR 200 bonus. They also called general workers' meetings in the sector's businesses. In Austria, these meetings come before all social conflicts. The clash started because of a severe disagreement over the interpretation of economic figures. (Ref. 110599)
