The German transportation and logistics sector, which employs 786,000 heavyweight drivers, is having more and more recruitment issues. With demographic ageing, they are going to get worse in the years to come. Besides, the sector's social partners are faced with many shortfalls: the trade's image is terrible and wages are low, just like apprenticeship and systems of prevention at work. Because of these grim prospects, 2011 saw the first form of response, namely unusually high wage agreements for the sector. However, 50 percent of transport firms are not affiliated with an employers' organization and negotiate company agreements, usually much lower. (Ref. 120029)
