The coming collective negotiations for the 3.6 million people working in the automotive, machine-tool, metal and electrical engineering industries will open on March 10. Already, key union organizations are starting to reveal their wage claims. The biggest of them, the Baden-Württemberg federation, has recently announced that it would call for a 6.5-7 percent increase. In spite of the uncertain economic situation, with the German economy doing well and several renowned economists calling for substantial increases, are going against employers' calls for moderation, especially since the previous agreement signed by metalworkers two years ago led to a rather moderate increase.
