The Court of Appeal issued an important ruling on March 23. A National Health Service (NHS) office fired an employee before his 50th birthday solely to avoid paying windfall pension they would have had to pay for dismissal after that age. The Court rules that the amount of the savings the employers was seeking justified such discrimination on the grounds of age. Even though it was a public organization, and therefore the argument that these savings were also good for taxpayers was not insignificant, this was the first court ruling recognizing that financial concerns alone could justify discrimination.
