On July 1, Bob King, leader of the American United Auto Workers (UAW), will become a full member of the supervisory board of Adam Opel GmbH. Sources tell Planet Labor that both General Motors and the German IG-Metall union, which suggested his nomination, wanted him to join. He was presented as the perfect mediator between European and American interests. Indeed, Opel, whose results are still in the red, is under pressure by the parent company which wants to improve the profitability of its European subsidiary and asking for great sacrifices. King’s arrival is also in line with the IG-Metall and UAW's joint strategy in the US and at global level. (Ref. 120215)
