Two disputes over redundancies and plant closure in Merseyside at the Austria-owned, Mayr-Melnhof Packaging (MMP), in Bootle, and the meat processor, Tulip in Birkenhead, owned by Danish Crown foods, have one thing in common. In both cases, the Unite union stepped out of its comfort zone and tried to pressurize managements by calling the attention of the shareholders, client companies, and political authorities of the States where the parent companies are located to these employers' practices. By Gregor Gall, Research Professor of Industrial Relations and Director of the Work and Employment Research Unit (WERU), University of Hertfordshire. (Ref. 120242)
