On Saturday, May 19 at dawn, after a last 18-hour marathon meeting, the IG-Metall union and the Südwestmetall employers' organization signed a decisive collective agreement in Sindelfingen, Baden-Württemberg. Removing the threat of an imminent general strike in the metal industry, this agreement grants the region's approximately 800,000 employees their highest wage increase in 20 years - 4.3 percent over 13 months. However, the key point is that it introduces, under certain conditions, a promise of permanent recruitment for apprentices and a recruitment promise for temporary workers, after two years in the company. All other regions, except Saxony, should use this agreement, which will then apply to some 3.6 million workers in the sector. (Ref. 120326)
