Far from clearing the fears of some 3,300 employees at the Bochum plant, Karl-Friedrich Stracke, chairman of the board of Opel, the German subsidiary of the American General Motors, refused, during a meeting of the staff in Bochum on May 21, to guarantee the site's future beyond 2014. Until that date, Opel's four German sites, Bochum included, are protected by agreements barring economic layoffs and site closures. On June 28, Opel's management should present its strategic development plan for Europe and give Bochum staff an answer. (Ref. 120333)
