On May 9, Assicurazioni Generali, the Italian insurer, and the trade unions, signed a groundbreaking agreement on employment protection, a first in Italy. Indeed, the agreement, which only covers the group's Italian operations, was not adopted as part of a restructuring program. It determines the procedure to adopt for future staffing cuts. "Generali has a tradition of framework agreements on employment but, so far, these agreements were always tied to reorganizations following mergers" explained Patrizia Sushmel, a member of the UILCA's national management. "When the previous agreement expired, Generali didn't want to renew it, precisely because it wasn' imperative. Yet, not only did we manage to renew the agreement (editor's note: until June 30, 2014), but we also improved it" the unionist went on. (Ref. 120425)
