At a symposium entitled "The German economy versus demographic change" on June 11 in Berlin, Veit Echterhoff, in charge of training policy at ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe AG explained how his company was successfully meeting demographic change challenges. As early as 2006, the management, the works council, the IG-Metall union and the sector’s employers’ organization adopted a "Program for the Future" to help the company a) inject new blood into the company and b) keep older employees working. Thus, the company temporarily brought the work week from 35 down to 34 hours to recruit, without changing costs, 1,000 apprentices. (Ref. 120417)
