Current deputy general secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Frances O'Grady has been elected to succeed the current general secretary, Brendan Barber, from January 2013. Effectively, she will take over from Barber at the end of the annual meeting Congress in early September when she becomes General Secretary Designate. O'Grady was the only candidate nominated by 32 of the TUC's 54 affiliates. She is the first woman to be elected to the post since the TUC was created in 1868. However, she continues the tradition of the general secretary coming from within the TUC and being elected without any rival candidates. Nonetheless, she is relatively young at the age of 52 to take up the position.
