Negotiations between the management and EWC of the German carmaker, Opel, led, on Thursday, August 23, to an agreement placing 9,300 Opel employees on short-time working (out of 22,500). These measures affect the Rüsselsheim and Kaiserslautern plant, but not Bochum. The possibility of shifting to a 4-day week (28 hours instead of 35) was ruled out notably because the pay cuts would have been too great for the employees. The short-time working measures (20 days without working) will come into force in September and last until the end of the year. They affect production and central services alike. (Ref. 120488)
