Within a few days, the Austrian metalworkers' unions, PRO.GE (manufacturing) and GPA-djp unions went from total rejection to the acceptance of the claims presented by the six metal employers' organizations that terminated the unitary sectoral collective agreement. For a long time, they have been requesting individual negotiations, which they believe are better for the realities of each sub-sector. The economic slowdown and the uncertainties over the activities can most likely explain why the trade unions changed their minds. Indeed, they are aware that, the longer the negotiations, the harder it is to impose high wage increases. Even though they gave their consent, they are still hoping that the separate negotiations which will start on September 19 will lead to a unitary agreement for the sector's 175,000 staff.
