On Siemens' small industrial site in North East, Maryland, USA, employees refused, on September 10, to be represented by the United Steelworkers (USW) union. The USW and the German metalworkers' union (IG-Metall) say this is due to a major antiunion bullying campaign by local management. Planet Labor has investigated into the bottom of this particularly embarrassing case for Siemens, as it allows uncertainty to persist about the sincerity of the German multinational's commitment. And yet, it has recently signed a global agreement on CSR. In order to ease the problems raised, the agreement's signing parties will meet on October 1, 2012. IndustriALL and the IG-Metall will also address the general difficulties in applying transnational agreement at an international conference on October 17-18 in Frankfurt. (Ref. 120550)
