The third collective bargaining meeting in the Austrian metal industry, last Friday, didn't last long. Unions were calling for a 5 percent wage increase, employers at the FMMI, the sector's largest organization, offered 2.8 percent, but only if the "employment pact" they propose is ratified. The Pact would cut working time for senior employees down to 35 hours a week and bring the work week up to 42 hours for the youngest, in both cases without adjusting pay. Unions feel like they are not being "taken seriously" and announced that they would consult their members about the possibility of going on strike before the 4th meeting on October 18. (Ref. 120587)
