The Otto Brenner foundation, the think-tank of the IG-Metall German union, published in September a case study entitled "Strengthening trade union networks through international framework agreements." From a case study at Volkswagen, Daimler and Bosch in the Indian auto cluster Pune, this survey looks into the implementation of international framework agreements on the respect of social standards and employee representation signed at the highest level between the managements of these three companies, the central works councils, the IG-Metall and the international metalworkers' organization. And the results are not good. In India, these agreements are barely known, let alone applied by the local unions to improve working conditions or employee representation. Planet Labor met with Anton Wundrak, who wrote the study and is explaining the reasons behind these failures and possible solutions. (Ref. 120610)
