In Sindelfingen, the biggest factory of Daimler, the German carmaker, a routing operation (cutting production for a new model) turned, at the end of September, into a major controversy between the management and the works council. However, on October 17, the parties announced a compromise in a joint press release, which should give the management greater production flexibility while taking account of employees' interests. The management threatened to call on an equal conciliation committee to solve the conflict, which was completely unheard of in the group. This conflict is symptomatic of the nation of the German co-management system: it shows that altercations between the management and the works council can be violent but that the parties always try to reach a compromise where everyone saves appearances.
