On Thursday, January 24, the HDE (the German Retail Federation) announced that it was going to terminate all sectoral agreements, pay agreements as well as framework agreements, in force in a sector which employs 2.7 million people. HDE sees this as the only way to modernize these agreements, which sometimes date back to the 50s or 60s. They notably complain about the link between pay scales and the definition of staff categories. The sector's employers are blaming Verdi for leaving, last summer, the working group which had been working on the issue for 10 years. Taken by surprise a few weeks before the start of the first collective negotiations on pay, the service union is crying shame and accusing employers of actually trying to negotiate generally worse working and pay conditions.
