This Wednesday, Walloon Minister for Economic Affairs Jean-Claude Marcourt made a formal plea to ArcelorMittal after the group announced, last week, that it intended to close 7 of the 12 lines of the cold-processing phase in Liege. At a debate in the Walloon Parliament, the socialist Ministers reminded the steel group's leaders of the commitments they made after meeting with the representatives of the federal and Walloon government. This concerns investments into the strategic cold-processing lines and cleaning up the site, the EUR 20-million penalty for failing to rehabilitate the blast furnace, or even the social debt. The Parliament debate focused on the levers the Walloon region has against ArcelorMittal. It seems that the words "nationalization" or "public backing" have been mentioned. (Ref. 130077)
