Suspense is over at Nissan's plant in Barcelona. The management and trade unions put an end to six months of tense negotiations and signed, on January 29, a competitiveness pact which will lead to the award of a new model and secure the Catalonian plant's future. The UGT and Workers' Commissions unions joined in the agreement already signed by the majority union, Sigen-USOC, which extends working time and introduces a two-tier pay system. Nissan should invest EUR 130 million, allowing the site to produce 80,000 units of the new model each year, which should create 1,000 jobs at Nissan and 3,000 for suppliers starting in 2015.
