On Thursday, January 31, Goodyear Dunlop Tires France (GDTF) announced that it intended to close the tire plant of Amiens-Nord (Somme region), thus cutting 1,173 jobs. "This decision aims to ensure the competitiveness of the group's passenger car and agricultural activities" explained Director General Henry Dumortier. Yet, he deplored the fact that "5 years of negotiations didn't lead to a compromise with the employee representatives." Unions say they will fight until the end and asked the government to take control of this case, which Minister of Industrial Renewal Arnaud Montebourg has promised to do. (Ref. 130084)
