The campaign against 'blacklisting' of "unwanted employees" in engineering and construction has taken a number of significant steps forward in recent months. Since the conviction of the director of the Consulting Association in 2009 for contravention of data protection laws, 3,213 workers have been shown to be potentially blacklisted between 1993 and 2008. Under this processes, they have potentially been prevented from gaining employment for which they were qualified and eligible. The result of this was poverty and destitution as they could not gain work. By Gregor Gall, Research Professor of Industrial Relations and Director of the Work and Employment Research Unit (WERU), University of Hertfordshire. (Ref. 130086)
