On Thursday, March 21, surprising everyone, a large majority of the workers at Opel's Bochum plant rejected the "Agreement for Opel's Future" negotiated at the end of February by the IG Metall union, the central works council and the management of the German-American carmaker. The Bochum employee representatives said that this agreement, which postponed until the end of 2016 the foretold end of auto production in Bochum, was "too vague." They now want to renegotiate the agreement. However, Opel's management already clearly refused and warned that production for the Zafira minivan in Bochum would end as early as late 2014 instead of 2016 as provided for in the Agreement for the future. The the vote is a major retraction from Bochum's metalworkers for the IG Metall's management. (Ref. 130194)
