A pre-agreement on the redundancy plan was struck on Monday morning, involving the management and trade unions at Caterpillar Belgium, in Gosselies, Charleroi. The closure of the site was announced at the beginning of September, a decision that will see the loss of 2,200 direct jobs. The unions are understood to have obtained gross compensation of between 32,250 and 110,000 euros, depending on length of service. However, in accordance with new federal legislation, early retirement pension can only be paid to workers aged 55 or over. The referendum on the agreement was due to take place today, but the reaction of workers has led the vote to be postponed. It is now set to take place on 27 February.
