At its plenary meeting on 18 July, ArcelorMittal's European Works Council expressed its concern about the impact on employment in Europe of the takeover of Ilva's Italian steel mills with 10,000 employees. The European Works Council deplores the fact that it did not obtain sufficiently precise answers to its questions at the select committee held on 6 July and "is worried about the impact on future investments of other sites" in European countries. In June, when the buyout was announced, the CGT stressed that the "Ilva complex represents significant production capacity, with a potential of 9.5 million tonnes per year, in the 'flat carbon' market, which is the major market of the French entities of the Group".
