On 03 October, workers at Volkswagen's Autoeuropa de Palmela facility near Lisbon voted for their representatives on the Workers Commission. The election was needed because workers had rejected the draft company agreement on new work organization arrangements as part of plans to produce Volkswagen's new vehicle from November 2017 (c.f. article No. 130347). Company management stated they would negotiate with this body and not with the trade unions. An independent list carried the vote with four representatives, short of an absolute majority of 6 representatives from the 11-member total. Another independent list secured 3 seats as did the CGTP affiliated SITE Sul union. The Sindel (UGT) list, like that of the Fernando Sequeira (coordinator of the previous workers commission and without any official link but known to be close to the radical left Bloco that backs the governing socialist party) went home without securing any seats. A formerly unknown phenomenon for Autoeuropa, the results mean alliance building within the workers commission will now be hampered by the dispersion of votes between six lists. The new commission will take up its function on 13 October and will negotiate a new agreement.
