Two NGOs, Sherpa and Peuples Solidaires, announced on 11 January that they had filed a complaint with the Paris Public Prosecutor against the Korean electronics giant Samsung and its French subsidiary. The complaint regards what the groups believe to be deceptive marketing practices. An initial complaint was closed in 2014. In its latest bid for legal action, the NGOs have gathered evidence collected by China Labor Watch, a New York-based NGO, which they described as far more damning and would justify a new investigation (ed. the proceedings are criminal). In their complaint, the NGOs denounce the use of child workers under the age of 16, excessive working hours and working conditions that are “incompatible with human dignity”. According to the groups, the practises are present in factories where products – smartphones, in particular – exported to France are manufactured. Action of this kind looks to apply legal force to multinationals’ ethical commitments.
