Following PSA’s announcement that a further 250 jobs are to be cut at the Vauxhall factory at Ellesmere Port, in the north of England, in addition to the 400 that had already been announced, the general secretary of Unite, the largest trade union in the UK, issued a warning on Twitter ahead of his meeting with Carlos Tavares, chief executive of the PSA group. He said he will make it “crystal clear […] that if there is any attempt to close the Ellesmere Port Vauxhall plant we will make sure their market in the UK is finished for good”. On Tuesday 9 January, workers at GM Korea validated a draft agreement reached at the end of the year, in difficult circumstances. Workers will receive a pay rise of 50,000 won per month (around 39 euros), a 6 million won bonus (around 4,671 euros) in February, followed by a 4.5 million (3,505 euros) won results bonus in April. The parties decided to begin negotiations over pay rises for 2018 from now, to avoid further disruption to production, after the strikes that marked the last round of negotiations.
