On 13 March management at aeronautics group Leonardo (previously Finmeccanica and with 29,000 staff in Italy) concurred with the Fiom-Cgil, Fim-Cisl, and Uilm unions over a protocol agreement, which will utilize the Fornero Law to boost generational turnover. This agreement intends for 1,100 voluntary early retirements for employees with less than four years before their legal retirement age. During the ‘early-retirement period, Leonardo will cover up to a maximum of 48 months compensation following their departure, equating to the employees’ future pension amount plus social contributions. As an incentive, the company will add an increment to boost the ‘pension’ to 80% of employees’ latest gross monthly salary. Those willing to leave can do so in November 2018, July 2019, or November 2019. Leonardo is now entering into negotiations to be able to offer the same possibility to company managers. Alongside this Leonardo has committed to a hiring program for the equivalent number of early-retirees as well as assistance so necessary competences are retained and transferred to the new hires. The protocol agreement will be completed by way of group division union agreements so that employment and production levels are maintained across all the group’s production facilities. Leaders at the Fiom union have welcomed this agreement, which evidences ‘detailed elaborate industrial relations’, and demonstrates ‘Leonardo is tackling the important issue of generational and professional renewal’ linked with the Industria 4.0 plan.’ Leonardo emphasized that the agreement is essential for supporting the company’s process of technological transformation and sustainable development and inaugurates ‘a significant move to strengthen competences’ as intended in its strategic plan.
