Against the unprecedented backdrop of labour shortages that Japan is currently experiencing, Tadashi Yanai, who leads the textile group Fast Retailing, is quoted here (https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Companies/Uniqlo-parent-to-offer-top-recruits-280-000-after-3-years) on June 23rd as having announced an overhaul of the group’s talent management policy. As such, from the spring of 2020, a promotion policy will be effective allowing access to management positions after three years of service, as well as an attractive pay policy. The wages of individuals who are promoted could then increase to 30 million yen ($ 280,000) a year in Europe and the United States, and 10 million yen for those working in Japan (by way of comparison, in August 2018, the average annual salary at the group was 8.8 million yen). Under the new system, new recruits will no longer be systematically assigned to stores, but will be offered the opportunity to go directly to departments that correspond with their skill set, without having to serve in-store which until now has been mandatory for any employee joining the group. Lastly, the employer plans to increase wages of part-time workers who interact with customers and to increase the starting pay of those hired and placed on the elite career track.
