This partnership between the trade union and the US giant’s Spanish subsidiary means Google will be offering online MOOC courses in 40-hour batches providing ‘digital competences for professionals’, which have been specifically tailored to currently working employees who are seeking to master digital tools that will be useful to them in their jobs. In addition, Google will train 200 senior trade union staff so that they too can transmit their knowledge base to their members, to other delegates, and to workers. Google also intends to include this training on its Google Activate platform, which was set up in 2014 with the aim of assisting digital skills training and facilitating employability as well as Spanish entrepreneurial spirit. For UGT it is ‘essential’ to embark on a process of updated digital training, especially in the public sector and to develop ‘an ambitious and adequately financed plan’ jointly with the social representatives. Google Spain and Portugal’s Chief Executive Fuencisla Clemares emphasized that this agreement, which involves developing quality work and making technology widely accessible, exemplifies Google’s commitment to Spain.
