The green light has been given to close the Vestas de Villadangos del Paramo facility located in Northern Spain’s Castille and Leon region. The facility’s 362 staff will be leaving with compensation payments of up to 67 days of paid leave per career year (with a minimum number of days being set at 20). These conditions were agreed with the Danish wind turbine manufacturer that decided to close the Spanish facility and develop its business elsewhere. Trade unions who fiercely opposed the closure nonetheless announced they had secured the ‘best agreement possible’ for the facility’s staff. Employees will also have the possibility of being hired in another one of the group’s sites, in Spain or elsewhere and of accessing external (in a different sector within the region) job search support plans. Phased job departures will take place until 31 December so that the final product orders can be completed. All is not lost however as the Castille and Leon region has indicated that an investor was looking at taking over the site as part of a re-industrialization plan. Trade unions are somewhat skeptical of the news that broke just immediately after the dismissal plan was secured. ‘In principle this is good news but we have to wait and see the substance of the plan especially as regards the facility and jobs,’ stated Francisco Romero, the facility’s UGT delegate.
