Some 1,000 flight attendants employed in Germany by the Irish low-cost airline Ryanair will soon be covered by their first ever collective agreement that will be governed by German labor legislation. Negotiated between Ryanair and the Verdi union during the week of 05 November, a very large majority of Ryanair workers (Verdi members) approved the main thrusts of the on 13 November Expected to be finalized before the end of November the agreement will expire at the end of March 2021. Both standard employees and interim workers will be covered by its contents that include a substantial increase in base flight attendant pay (+€600 per month) as well as a minimum guarantee of 600 flight hours. In addition in case the number of planes and/or airbases diminishes (via closures) compensation could, for the first time, be negotiated for transfer situations as part of a social plan. The Verdi trade union will also have to be involved over any airbase closures. In another major move, according to Verdi, employment contracts will be transferred into national employment contracts. Flight staff will also receive redundancy protection. Verdi, who called the agreement a ‘great success’, nonetheless was disappointed the airline had rejected the proposal for creating a works council. Verdi is currently relying on the German Labor Minister who has, on several occasions, stated that he was prepared to undertake measures that would require Ryanair to agree to setting up a works council. The ‘Law on company establishment’ in fact intends that flight personnel can only set up a works council if the relevant employer and trade union are in agreement. Four Länder (Berlin, Brandenburg, Bremen, and Thüringen) have announced they will be lodging an initiative with the Bundesrat that seeks to strengthen the rights of flight personnel.
